CUSTOM DECALS/POLICE CAR PARTS

After a hiatus of several years, I am getting back into my favorite hobby. I am building a diorama of my dad's Montgomery County, Md. police cruiser ('96 Crown Vic) in front of a favorite restauant. Where can I get custom decals made of his car's markings, and a scale print of the front of the restaurant? Also, the radio/siren box and light bar from the Lindberg 1/25 scale kit I bought is incorrect for his car--his radios mounted below the dash, and his bar was half blue/half red, not red and clear. I could paint the bar I have, but do not have the skills to make it look realistic. For those familiar with Mon. Co.'s cars, who/what kit would have the correct light bar and radio/siren box? I am trying to have this project finished for a special occasion, so any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Looking forward to a rare break

In Budapest

There are some questions that you hardly ever hear when working in and around the Formula 1 circus and "are you having a holiday?" is certainly one of them.

Such is the constant nature of a season: the relentless march of race followed by race means the concept of a holiday tends to be alien to all F1 personnel from March to November.

However, that doesn't apply today. As I write this blog, I'm sitting waiting for the plane to fly us home, and the various F1 team members, still wearing their kit, are discussing what they will do to fill the gap between now and the next race, the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa at the end of August.

Well, I have my break already mapped out as I've a very important job to do. My awesome little brother Tom is getting married this month so I have Best Man duties to perform.

It can be so easy to get caught up in the F1 bubble and lose perspective of what is really important in life. Particularly this weekend, when at times it has seemed like the whole world revolves around the BBC and Formula 1.

It was certainly all we talked about among ourselves. Well, now that the race is over I can press the reset button and remind myself that family and occasions like 'Nipper's' wedding is actually the 'real world' and it helps put things into perspective.

Next weekend is the stag do but I can't write anything about it here in case he reads it. I'll need my speech written the weekend after, and then it's a family barbeque seven days after that.

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions. If you're reading via RSS, you'll need to visit the blog to access this content.

When I got married, the speech went on for 40 minutes and I'm sure I'll be under strict instructions not to go on too much this time!

I'll also find space for a break, and apart from that it's time to recharge the batteries - and boy do I need it, especially after this weekend.

So, let's talk about the news about the UK TV rights which emerged over the weekend.

Having a broad understanding of television, the state the wider industry is in, and the challenges facing my own employer is essential for me. It helps me do my job better, understand how various decisions are taken, and plan for the future.

Against that backdrop I had a sense that there was a very real threat that F1 was going to be lost from the BBC for good after this year and I knew that various conversations were taking place at a much higher level than I am privy to.

I, like many of you, had seen the headlines over the past month and I suspected that we would get some news sooner rather than later. However, contrary to popular belief I didn't have the inside track on what was happening and on Thursday evening I went for dinner and then bed thinking it was set to be just like any other race weekend.

I then woke up at 7am as my phone was ringing - Ben Gallop the BBC F1 boss had flown to Budapest, was in the lobby of the hotel and had news on the TV deal.

The next few hours went by in something of a haze. There was some understandable sadness and confusion as the news sunk in that things were changing. I think my breakfast consisted of one mouthful of coffee.

I honestly believe there is only one way to do this job and it is to give 100% at all times. Since 2009 we have constantly looked to change, evolve and improve our coverage every week and I'm really proud of the job we've done.

Despite the jet lag, hours spent in airports and cramped journeys across the globe (the flip-side to the 'glamour' of F1!), every member of the production team on camera and behind the scenes feel so blessed and lucky to do this job - and our only aim has been to produce the best output for the audience. That has always been the mantra: keeping you guys and your entertainment at the centre of our decisions.

My highlights so far include: interviewing Max Mosley in 2009 as a breakaway threat loomed, when he ended up calling Flavio Briatore a "loony"; bringing you as close as possible to the sport when we were in the garage as Jenson Button won the world title; and our Bafta-winning show from Abu Dhabi last year, when we saw Sebastian Vettel crowned the youngest ever champion.

I can honestly say I have never worked with a more talented or dedicated team. From free practice early on a Friday to the F1 Forum that often finishes two hours after the race, we try to get you to the heart of the drama.

I love standing next to Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard in the paddock - and thank you for inviting us into your living rooms every weekend. I know how special it is to be in this position, and you have made it such a pleasure with your feedback and loyalty.

Now, please don't take the above as me saying those days are over! It's just inevitable that after the news of the weekend, and the messages of support we've received, I can't help but reflect on what we've done since March 2009 and how we've gone about doing it.

Trust me that we will be working even harder to make the end of this year a resounding success on the BBC and looking to be stronger, better and more professional than ever.

There's no disguising that from next year it will be different. I know it is frustrating for you to not yet know the finer detail - and as soon as we have it worked out, you will be the first to know.

From the presenting team to the races we cover live, to the transmission times of the highlights shows and how we make those a success too. You will again be central to how the BBC make those decisions.

And after 2011 please be assured of this: the BBC will endeavour to make the overall F1 offering as enthralling and compelling as possible. We never take our work for granted and we will be always be driven by that desire to produce the best shows for you, our audience.

I think the drama on the track, coupled with the kind of treatment the media as a whole has given it recently, has taken Formula 1 to new people and new heights. From 2012 onwards it won't be quite the same on the BBC - but the effort and passion invested in covering the sport certainly won't diminish.

I'm proud of what we continue to bring you - this weekend being yet another reminder of what this incredible sport can deliver, and I look forward to sharing more moments like Jenson's win after the summer break.

Have a great summer. I'm off to get working on that speech...

Jake

Sox & Martin 70 Cuda W.I.P.

I'm working on a pair of Johan 71 Cuda's. I'm not really interested in superdetailing them so I'm keeping all the Johan parts. So here is my delema. I'm looking for some good info or photo's on the outside appearance of the 70 Cuda as raced. I know there are differences from race to race. The restored 70 had red bumpers and a red tail light panel. Also these kits only have one seat but most pics I see two seats. Were they raced with both seats?

As for the kit's it's funny but I bought one kit in the late 80's new at a local hobby store. I rode my bike to get a model and that is the one I picked up. I somehow lost one front rim and broke a rear rim back then. So Only the motor was painted and glued. About two years ago I picked up another built kit from a friend for $8. I wanted just the wheels and the rest was parts originaly. So I decided to strip the paint and see what shape this one was in. Now it's just as clean and restorable. I just needed some glass, the front suspension part and now wheels again. I got resin Modelhaus wheels and traded for the rest of the missing parts. So then I thought I would do one as a 70 and got the Reliable Resin kit to do it.

Pics to come.

Team order rule needs a re-think

Jean Todt arives for Wednesday's hearing © Getty Images
Formula One should look at abolishing the controversial ban on team orders after Ferrari escaped further punishment for their manipulation of the German Grand Prix result. That is the view of the Daily Telegraph?s Tom Cary, who is of the opinion that the team orders rule now needs to be seriously looked at because of its obvious shortcomings.
?Whether you are for or against team orders, if the FIA could not back up its own rules and nail a competitor in a blatant case such as this the rule really does need reviewing. Perhaps Ferrari?s thinly-veiled threat to take the matter to the civil courts if they were punished too harshly scared the governing body, who as much as admitted the flimsiness of its rule."
Paul Weaver, reporting for the Guardian in Monza, was in favour of the ruling which keeps alive Ferrari?s slim chances in an enthralling championship.
?The World Motor Sport Council was right not to ruin a compelling Formula One season by taking away the 25 points Alonso collected in Germany. That would have put him out of the five-man title race. But the council was widely expected to increase the fine and possibly deduct points from the team, as opposed to the individual. In the end, it could be argued that common sense prevailed. But the decision will dismay those who were upset by the way Ferrari handled the situation as much as anything else.?
The Daily Mail's Jonathan McEvoy expressed outrage at the FIA tearing up its own rule book by allowing Ferrari to escape unpunished.
"Although the race stewards fined them 65,000 for giving team orders in July, the FIA World Motor Sport Council, to whom the matter was referred, decided not to impose any further punishment. It leaves the sport's rulers open to derision. It was, after all, their rule they undermined. In a statement, the WMSC said the regulation banning team orders 'should be reviewed'."

Life in the pit lane

Away from the world of multi-million-pound car development laboratories and drivers whose small change takes care of the Monte Carlo harbour fees, another drama will play out in Singapore this week. The Independent's David Tremayne joins F1's unsung heroes.
These are not select millionaires but up to 16 ordinary, yet gifted, guys; team mechanics who have worked their way up the system and often migrate from team to team, are paid real-world wages of between 30,000 and 50,000 a year, are drilled to perfection ? and whose split-second synchronisation brings their teams huge rewards.

Jaime Alguersuari - classic F1

Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersuari is the latest grand prix driver to pick his five all-time favourite races for BBC Sport's classic Formula 1 series.

The 21-year-old Spaniard has been impressing on the track in recent races, putting to one side speculation about his future with strong drives into the points in the last three races - Canada, Valencia and Silverstone.

Alguersuari is a singular character - outspoken and interesting, with a particularly idiosyncratic approach to his Twitter account.

He has applied that uniqueness to his choice of races for this feature, which we use to whet your appetites for the action to come at this weekend's German Grand Prix.

In chronological order, his choices are as follows:

The 2006 Japanese Grand Prix

A no-holds-barred, flat-out battle between F1's then top two drivers - Fernando Alonso and Michael Scumacher. It was reminiscent of a similar fight between Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen six years previously. Alonso, driving for Renault, put huge pressure on Schumacher throughout the race, so much so that the Ferrari's engine eventually broke.

The result did not quite secure Alonso a second consecutive championship but it did put him in a virtually unassailable position - and he made no mistake at the final race of the season in Brazil. This is the first time we have shown highlights of that Japanese race.

The 2007 European Grand Prix.

Alguersuari remembers that "there was a big casino with the rain and you had whatever Force India was then - Spyker maybe - actually leading the race and a lot of people crashing". He's right. This was a spill-a-minute race, won by Alonso, who was driving for McLaren. More on that in a moment.

The 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix

"Because it was my first grand prix," says Alguersuari.

It was also the scene of a brilliant victory by Lewis Hamilton in a McLaren car that had started the season more than two seconds off the pace.

The 2010 Australian Grand Prix

This race will long be remembered for Jenson Button's inspired victory for McLaren. It was also enlivened by Alguersuari's brief but exciting tussle with Michael Schumacher, when the Spaniard re-passed the German legend after being overtaken.

"It was the first time I had really had a battle with someone in Formula 1," Alguersuari says. "It was the start of something good, of what was a big season for me in 2010. It was the basis of my championship."

The 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel led Mark Webber to a comfortable Red Bull one-two but Alguersuari remembers the race because it was the one in which he scored his first F1 points. "That was very nice and something I will not forget," he says.

----------------------------

As always, we choose one of these races to highlight. This time, we have gone for the 2007 European Grand Prix, which was held at the Nurburging, the track that hosts this weekend's German GP.

It was an incident-packed weekend, starting from the moment Hamilton crashed his McLaren at high-speed in qualifying after a wheel came off, leaving the Englishman in 10th place on the grid, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen on pole and Hamilton's team-mate Alonso beside him on the front row.

The Nurburgring, high in the Eifel mountains, is famous for its capricious weather - and this race was no different. After rain hit on the first lap, Spyker's Markus Winkelhock, making his one and only grand prix start, held the lead. The race was then stopped after four laps before Alonso and Raikkonen's team-mate, Felipe Massa, battled it out for the win.

In the dry, Massa pulled out a lead of about five seconds only for Alonso to cut it back in the closing stages. The late rain then gave Alonso the chance he needed.

After both men had fitted intermediate tyres, Alonso was much faster than Massa, the Spaniard passing the Brazilian with a superb move around the outside of Turn Five, the two men banging wheels as the McLaren went through.

The result moved Alonso to within two points of Hamilton in the championship - and set the stage for a cataclysmic sequence of events at the next race at Hungary.

The highlights of that thrilling Nurburgring race are embedded below - Murray Walker is the commentator as he did a one-off stand-in race for BBC Radio 5 live that weekend.

There are also links to short and extended highlights of last year's German Grand Prix, which was held at Hockenheim. During the controversial race, Ferrari asked Massa to hand the lead to Alonso, now his team-mate, to boost the latter's title chances.

Bugatti Type 57S Bella Figura Coupe by Delahaye

Bringing back the spirit of a classic car takes years and years of work. For example to create the Bugatti Type 57S Bella Figura Coupe, Delahaye USA needed a total of three years of hard work. But the result is very impressive. Their car, the Figura Coupe pays tribute to Jean Bugatti and his elegant Type 57S.

The car is not just a replica, it is in fact a stretched and widened coupe which comfortably fits two six-foot-six occupants while respecting the classic Bugatti look and feel. The car features a body with hinged and latched inner and outer door, double layer roof, while the door hinges are custom steel copies of Bugatti Atlantic, with door swing study and stops. The car is a "Full Carbon" construction made with four layers of 5.7 oz. 2 x 2 twill carbon fiber.

For the engine option, Delahaye has used an all aluminum 5 liter M70 BMW V-12, but the production version will feature a a new supercharged 556 HP 6.2 liter LSA Cadillac engine. The company will be also offering a much powerful version that will use a RennTech twin turbocharged Mercedes V-12 engine, but this version will cost about $120,000.

Bugatti Type 57S Bella Figura Coupe by Delahaye originally appeared on topspeed.com on Tuesday, 23 August 2011 23:45 EST.

Revamped Silverstone wins over the fans

At Silverstone

Silverstone's owners have spent 40m in the last two years to modernise the historic Northamptonshire circuit that Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone once famously described as a "country fair masquerading as a world event".

Of that cash, raised by the British Racing Drivers' Club, 28m has been absorbed by a state-of-the-art pits and paddock complex, and the rest has gone on improving spectator facilities.

This year, ticket-holders to the British Grand Prix have their own "fans zone" - which curves round the Luffield section of the old grand prix track - new steeped, grass banks to watch from and two brand new grandstands at Farm and along the pit straight.

There's even the equivalent of Wimbledon's "Henman Hill" - which has been unofficially dubbed Hills' Hill after father-and-son world champions Graham and Damon Hill - where fans can watch the racing from a giant screen.

The new pit complex at Silverstone.

Silverstone has a rebuilt pit lane but not everyone is happy about it. Photo: PA

The philosophy behind the facelift was to give fans the opportunity to rove around in a festival atmosphere - but has the investment improved the experience?

"The last time we came was four years ago and the difference is unbelievable," said Louise Torrance from Aberdeen.

"At the campsites there are now loads of showers, films like The Italian Job at night and a disco as part of the entertainment.

"Was the investment worth it? One hundred percent. We've heard other people saying it's much better than last year, so it can only get better from here on in."

Sarah Davies found herself sharing the weekend with first-time British Grand Prix visitor John Beazley after their mutual friend broke his ankle at the circuit during Friday practice.

Sarah, from Oxford, said: "The medical staff were fantastic. The paramedics took him to the medical centre, set it straight away and took him to hospital."

Beazley, who hails from Sheffield, added: "I've wanted to come for years and years. I've been following motorsport since the Nigel Mansell days and I'm just blown away by the noise and the amazing atmosphere."

The Formula 1 world championship was born at Silverstone 61 years ago when the former World War II airfield hosted the opening round of the sport's inaugural season.

But two years ago Ecclestone was ready to pull the plug on the circuit, leaving the existence of the British Grand Prix in real danger.

The pledge to plunge millions of pounds into Silverstone saved both the circuit and the British GP, and on Sunday a record sell-out crowd of 120,000 fans will come through the gates.

The BRDC can ask for no better vindication than that, but the revamped circuit is not without its problems.

The new pit lane slopes below the level of the track and that means the fans' views of the pit stops from the opposite grandstand are obscured.

The plan had been for the slowest teams on the grid to occupy those garages but the layout was switched so that members of the "Paddock Club" - who pay a premium for their seats - could watch the race-defining stops at Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari.

The team principals at Red Bull and McLaren, who have been bickering for most of the weekend over a controversial change in the sport's technical regulations, were united in their criticism of the issue.

"For those in the grandstands, who can't see the pit stops, it's a bit of a shame," said McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh.

His Red Bull counterpart, Christian Horner, added: "The spectators are not going to see many Red Bull or McLaren pit stops this weekend. It's not great."

There are also concerns that the relocated podium isn't in front of a grandstand and so fans could be tempted to surge onto the track, just like in less safety conscious days, at the end of the race.

And in times of austerity, it is no surprise that some spectators find Silverstone's ticket prices challenging.

Sarah Davies added: "The prices are expensive. It cost me 300 this weekend which is a lot of money when you're on a budget. Silverstone could do more."

Surprisingly, there was one thing the fans were, on the whole, not complaining about - the temperamental British weather, which sent sheeting rain and gusts of wind across Silverstone.

After all, for British fans there's no place like home.

Ford Mustang Boss 302 HPE650 by Hennessey

The Ford Mustang Boss 302 is a car that needs no presentation. Every Mustang fan has been impressed by it ever since Ford announced it back in March and most consider the engine’s standard 440 horsepower and 380 lb/ft of torque to be just perfect for a muscle car.

That being said, Hennessey has found a solution to improve it even further, despite the fact that the Mustang Boss 302 is about as awesome as any Mustang can get nowadays. In any case, the whole package revolves around the performance improvements on the car. At the heart of it all is the installation of a new supercharger system that boosts the output of the muscle car by over 600 ponies, which is to say that the rich just gets richer.

On top of that, the package also includes a few visual additions to ensure that whenever people walk by your Mustang Boss 302, they know without a hint of doubt that they’re looking at a Hennessey-tuned muscle car.

Find out more about the Ford Mustang Boss 302 HPE650 after the jump.
